Reconceptualized Model of
Multiple Dimensions of Identity

Reconceptualized Model of Multiple Dimensions of Identity was developed by Abes and Jones.

Description of this Theory

Personal identity is portrayed at the center of this fluid, non-linear model of identity development which incorporates the interpersonal, intrapersonal, and cognitive elements of self-authorship theory, in addition to intersectional identities, and theories of feminist identity development.

The theory was developed in 2007, and in 2013  added concepts of queer theory and critical race theory. The Reconceptualized Model of Multiple Dimensions of Identity (RMMDI) contends that a student will experience their identities differently in different campus contexts and over time their identities (national, gendered, religious, etc.) will influence one another as they interact with others.

As the student “performs,” or repeats behaviors in accord with their identity, they will create a sense of self which is still fluid and relative to the environment around them. Each dimension has the possibility of increasing in importance or decreasing in importance as it becomes more or less salient to the student.

Student service practitioners can apply this theory to recognize how changes in campus environment, relationships, and sociopolitical conditions can influence the students sense of self.
